Add a shower to my bath but have a window - bathroom remodel problem

by JR

I have a bathroom remodel problem - I want to add a shower to an existing bath, but I have a window there - smack dab in the middle of the tub wall.

I am looking for suggestions about what should I put over the window to allow me to add a shower in my tub.

Bath Remodel Answer

I had the same problem and in a very small bathroom. So I removed the tub,and re-arranged the space and installed a shower, and a corner sink.I have never missed the tub and it is very efficient and easy to keep clean.

Me too!

We have a shower/tub combo with a window right smack in the middle. The window sill is marble which is great for water resistance and we use a decorative frosted shower curtain as the window dressing (cut to size) with a valance up top. Not quite a sophisticated look but it works for a house that will be reaching 100 years old within the next few years. Good luck!

Recently had same issue

If I am reading your questions correctly, you can put tile around the opening of the window, I am assuming you have vinyl windows. We recently tiled our shower surround and tiled the sill and all, of course using cement backer as well. Works great and looks really nice. The same concept of having an inset shower shelf in tile, but just with a window.

Oops Remodel caused Mold
by: Anonymous

We added a shower a few years back to a bathroom with an existing tub. We now get to tear it all out & redo the whole tub area. Why? We didn't realize we needed to make sure there was mold resistant cememt board behind the existing tile. Now we have a mold mess.

Two possible solutions
by: DIYBath

JR -

A fairly simple solution would be to paint the trim of the window with a semi-gloss paint with plenty of mildew resistance additive in it (you can buy a mildew resistance additive at a home improvement store). Then add a shower curtain to the window as a "curtain" for the windoe - you can cut it to size,

Another, more involved solution would be to replace the window with Glass Block Tile bricks. You could place the blocks in front of the existing window if you have enough space.

Good Luck with your remodel -
