Complete Bathroom Remodel Grout and Shower Question

by Wanda

Our contractor used epoxy grout in master and it appears that they grouted the corners and where floor joins walls. What should be done?I had heard that caulk should be used so when tiles flex the caulk would allow some give.Is this OK?Also,he surface of the tiles feel gritty now.

Also, what is standard drain placement for master shower with bench. I wanted the drain centered between seat & front wall (flat area)but it was centered on the whole shower. There is an overhead rain shower and the current placement cuts into back up area towards seat and it is not centered in door opening. It is a new shower with new plumbing installed.I like the contractor but his crews don't seem that knowledgeable. This is an expensive renovation and I am getting a little concerned.

Wanda - Thank you for submitting a question to our Bathroom Remodel Problems page...

Tile grout on the bathroom floor should cover the entire area even between the wall and the tile.

As far as the drain placement for the shower goes, most of the time, the contractors will try to fit their placement to the existing drain - but, if you have new plumbing, and have a concern, you need to talk to your contractor about it... the contractor, not the crews.

If you are paying for an expensive renovation, you should make sure that you are getting what you want!

Take care, and happy remodeling.

Thank you for answering some of my questions. One grout rep said that some epoxy grout manufacturers recommend running a box cutter down the corner walls to allow for expansion so the tile doesn't break. I guess it depends on the manufacturer.

I still don't know where the drain should go in a new shower but the shower door people said it is installed in the center of the space between the seat and the front wall, in the center of the usable floor space. They said in a renovation where there is no choice it is installed where the old drain is. The contractor is still learning and he was as interested in the correct answer as I was. Maybe there are no correct answers in renovation and some of it is just trial and error. Thanks for your input.
