How much work/cost is involved in removing a tub and creating a walk in shower?
Ingrid - Hello and thanks for submitting a Bathroom Shower How To question...
Well, your question can be broken down into several steps.... removing a bathtub can be a hard task, but it can be done on your own..... refer to our How to remove a bathtub page to see steps involved in removing the existing bathtub. If you want to have someone do this job for you, you can check out local contractors, but don't expect the job to take more than a day to complete (removing the old bathtub that is).
Then you will need to start building the shower - you can purchase shower pans that will fit right into the space where you removed the tub - even using the existing drain system.... another visitor asked a similar question about replacing a bathtub with a shower, and I listed several links to the shower pans needed there.....and if you are going to install a shower pan, you owe it to yourself to check out this video on installing a shower pan.
After placing the shower pan, and getting the drainage right, you can move into re-finishing the walls....either in tile, or shower board....
You could realistically do the project for less than $1000 in materials if you do it yourself.... and that is with a nice tile finish....
Good luck on your bathroom remodel!
