How do I remove bathroom floor & wall tiles?

This is my First Bathroom Remodel, and probably the 1st of many questions I'll need answered before I can even start demolition.

How do I remove bathroom ceramic floor tile? The tiles are 1 inch octagon ceramic tiles, approx 50 years old, and still set pretty solid. It looks like I'll need a sledge hammer to put a dent in it, but don't want to destroy the 1st floor ceiling below.

I don't know if it matters but the tile on the walls will also be demolished, but have not made up my mind on the tub (refinish/reline or replace).

When removing wall tile should I also remove the wall behind it?

Where do I start? Should I rent a dumpster? I have safety glasses and gloves - are there any other safety items recommended?

Removal of fixtures

first things first. Turn off the water then remove your fixtures like the sink and toilet. What is under the tile, cement? you'll need a sledge and chisel. get cracking, don't be daintily...slamm at em.
