How do you switch a bathtub for a stand up shower?
Hello Gary - and
Thank you for submitting a Bathroom Shower How To question...
You can start, of course by removing the bathtub< that is currently in your bathroom...by following the steps on our how to remove a bathroom page.
Once you have the bathtub removed, you of course will be presented with a sub-floor..... and the plumbing that was connected to your bathtub. The plumbing will be the main issue here.... the drain is set up for a bathtub (drain all the way to the right or left), and the plumbing for the bathtub faucet is located along the wall either to the right of to the left.
To keep from re-plumbing your shower drain, you will need to select a shower receptor that has a right or left side drain - there are even shower receptors that are as wide as the bathtub that you just removed.
Here are links to some shower receptors that you can review for yourself.... these are also available at your local home improvement store.
These two shower receptors will fit the space that a standard 5 foot bathtub fits into...
Kohler - k-1786-L-47 - Fountainhead Shower Receptor With Left Hand Drain
Kohler - K-1786-R-0 - Fountainhead Shower Receptor With Right Hand Drain
These shower receptors fit into a smaller space....
Kohler - K-9547-45 - Memoirs Shower Receptor With Left Hand Drain
Kohler - K-9486-0 - Memoirs Shower Receptor With Integral Seat at Right and Left Hand Drain
... and there are many more selections at eFaucets.com.... where you can simply search on "shower receptors".
After installing the shower receptor, you can tile the wall... check out our Tile Made Easy Series.... or install shower panels or a shower enclosure system....you will find these at your local home improvement warehouse.
Afterwards, if you choose a smaller size than your original bathtub, you will need to repair the floor to level it.... then finish the floor as you wish....
Good Luck on your Bathroom Remodel....
