I am ripping out an old shower surround and want to replace it with tile. My question is, how do I build up the now non-existent walls? I assume I will need to put some 2 x 3 studs in for bracing, but what happens after that? Do I put up durock or fiberboard? Do I attach green board over that? Also, if I put up durock, do I "mud the seams?" If so, how? Thanks.

Karl - You will begin by framing in the shower with 2 X 4 studs to the size and shape that you want your shower to be.
As you are going to tile over the shower wall, use a 1/2" concrete backer board, then fiberglass mesh tape and thinset to finish the joints (not traditional drywall spackle). This concrete backerboard will not turn to mush if water happens to get behind the wall....
Good luck on your bathroom remodel....
