Ground fault circuit interpreter (GFCI) can save lives at home. It is designed to protect people from getting electrocuted in areas in the house where water and electricity are likely to touch. Areas like bathroom, kitchen counter, or areas right outside the home are required to have GFCI installations. Other areas that must have GFCI are unfinished basements, garages, crawl spaces, area near sinks, and outbuildings. A GFCI installation can also be referred to as safety switch. It is a cheap electrical device that protects against fatal electric shocks and electrical fires. What it does is to interrupt the flow of current by turning off the power when it detects imbalance or loss of current. The <b>receptacle-type of GFCI should be handled by a qualified electrician</b> and should not be attempted by those who have no electrical wiring experience. The <b>portable GFCI</b> is the one that can be installed regardless if one knows about electrical circuits or not. If you have installed a GFCI, you should maintain in properly by <b>testing it once a month</b> to make sure that they are functioning well.
