Is a membrane needed between cement board and tile in a shower?

by Galina

Hi, We are re-doing our shower. Now we are putting 12x12 onyx tiles on the shower walls. Our contractor guy is using cement board, but said we do not need any layers over cement and tiles (I mean something like Kerdi's membrane). Is he right or trying to cut corners? Thank you.

Galina - Thank you for submitting a Bathroom Shower How To question...

If the area behind your shower walls are clean and dry, then the use of cement board is all that should be needed between the walls and the tile.

The contractor may want to look at using a latex mortar that is designed for this specific use....

A Kerdi Membrane would definitely be called for if the contractor was using straight drywall instead of cement board.

Good luck on the bathroom shower remodel...
