leaking shower window caused mold to studs

by Julie
(Seattle,Wa.)

We just found mold and rotten wood from taking off the tiles in our tub/shower. The window that is inside the shower must have been leaking for years.

We have torn out all the untreated sheet rock and found just under the window and behind the tub this problem. We sprayed the mold with special mold killer and let it dry then repeated the process again. Our concern is that the mold has also taken over the plywood between the studs at this spot. We are worried about the outside structure as the window is on the exterior wall.

We have old siding on the house and fear we will have to remove it to get to the plywood. What are we looking at to repair this?

Some Tips
Thank you for submitting your bathroom remodel problem to our bathroom remodel problems page.

You will have to verify that the mold is completely killed - bleach will help, but look into a spray to kill the mold.

If you have the leak fixed, and the mold is completely killed, you should not have any further problem.

If there is damage to any of the studs, they should be replaced.

Good luck on you bathroom remodel...
