what is a replacement for 4" x 4" tiles up the shower wall above the tub?

I am assuming form the question, that you had to remove 4 X 4 tiles from your tub/shower for one reason or another.... and you want to replace it with something else....
You can place a shower board in the area where the tile was removed. Shower board has a slick surface, and comes in many colors and designs... these can be purchased at any warehouse store.
